For a long time, lamps have been an electrical experience – the light being evidence of electrical current passed through a filament. But now modern lighting has become unrecognisable, no longer the subject of electricity, but of electronics. Printed circuit boards, micro-chips, diodes and interfaces are now the staple ingredients, giving us greater control, conserving energy and providing longer lifespans. This transformation is a chance to establish new possibilities for the meeting point between light and electronics.
This is not a story about gadgetry (regardless technical achievements), but rather an affirmation about how we live – that wherever light is supplied, power is often also required to charge our burgeoning electronic devices. Wastberg Busby w152 Table Lamp Ambient is an electronic lamp that provides intelligent universal power from three USB outlets, detecting charging requirements and managing them at their fastest rate, however many variable devices are plugged in. It provides up to 3 Amps of power – enough to charge the latest generation of laptop computers. It can be supplied either as a freestanding or wall-mountable lamp, or built-in to a surface. The w152 illuminates and powers the office, the workshop, the library, the living room and the bedside table.
Sam Hecht and Kim Colin are partners and founders of the design office Industrial Facility in London. Their designs reflect both a meticulous attention to detail and a thoughtful consideration of its context. Hecht is from London; Colin is from Los Angeles. They have developed production projects for companies ranging from Yamaha and Issey Miyake to Herman Miller and Mattiazzi. They are probably best known for their work with Muji Japan, as world designers and advisors since 2002. They are known for creating beauty out of utility in the products, furniture and exhibitions they design.
The studio’s work has been well documented, with over fifty international awards, including 6 iF Hannover Gold Awards. Their work forms part of most significant permanent collections including the MoMA, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; SFMOMA and the Chicago Art Institute, amongst others, and was the subject of the exhibition ‘Industrial Facility: Some Recent Projects’, held at the Design Museum in 2008. Hecht was appointed ‘Royal Designer for Industry’ in 2008, as well as being nominated for the Prince Phillip design prize. Colin was appointed ‘Royal Designer for Industry’ in 2015. In 2011 and 2013 the studio was awarded ‘Design of the Year’ for furniture from the Design Museum, London and Elle Decoration respectively. Their book ‘Usefulness in Small Things’ was published by Rizzoli in 2011. In 2015 they presented their curatorial exhibition ‘Beauty as Unfinished Business’ at the Saint Etienne Biennale in France.
