Hay Palissade Chair
Hay Palissade Chair is part of the new outdoor collection from HAY designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec.
Created for outdoor use, this balanced collection comprises 13 different furniture typologies that all share the same principle geometry.
The collection has been developed over the course of two years. It grew from a period of research at their studio into outdoor furniture typologies. The final designs are made from powder coated steel and include dining chairs, tables, low stool, bar stool, bench, dining bench, lounge chairs and a sofa.
The Palissade collection is visually light yet reassuringly strong; it is classical in form and simple in construction. Each individual piece has been carefully engineered to hold the body in perfect balance. There are almost imperceptible, but significant changes to the angles, curves and the juxtaposition between the frame and slats in each different typology.
The design itself provides comfort and elegance, while the colour palette of light grey, anthracite and olive allow the pieces to be at home in both natural landscapes and urban settings. The collection perfectly suits domestic terraces, gardens and balconies, or more commercial outdoor environments such as cafes, bars and restaurants.
“Designing the entire collection was quite a long process, because to achieve it in a balanced way, it is not just a reverie. I think we can take out all the pieces by themselves and I think the character they have is extremely strong.” says Ronan Bouroullec.
The Palissade collection is significant in that it has been designed to improve over time; it is full of precision yet celebrates ageing. It is design that is human, humble and full of joy.
Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and HAY share in the aspiration to create design that is both accessible and of exceptional standard. “Since the beginning, it was very clear to me that this collection, these pieces, needed to have a particular aspect, something you could trust. The weight is part of this fact that you trust a piece like this, you let it in your garden, outside for all the years, you do not care to treat it in a fragile way. For me these are the types of pieces that stay for a while, and that maybe you would repaint after ten or twenty years.” Ronan Bouroullec explains.
