Cassina at imm cologne 2018 presented a beautiful stand full of their classics as well as newer additions to the collection. It was characterised by the In Store Philosophy 3 concept – the coordinated image developed by Patricia Urquiola for the company’s stores.
This seating system comprises three sofas, which can also be used individually, and modular padded elements: two or three-seater end units with left- or right-hand armrest, two-seater centre units, corner units and left- or right-hand chaise lounges, ottoman and centre or end low tables. Each element rests on a “beam” base: geometric, formal, with a strong aesthetic impact, the base is the functional core of the system. Indeed, it enables various configurations to be created, arranging the padded elements together or alternating the seating, tables and ottoman in interesting compositions. This contemporary take focuses on practicality and comfort together with attention to detail, to enhance its aesthetic characteristics: soft, cosy yet not excessively huge cushions, the high back, stitching detail along the edges, the sideways protrusion of the overlapping back and the armrest and the two possible positions of the armrest for quality relaxation.
Small architectures that grow inside things. A system of forms that orbit around each other and acquire identity from their reciprocal relationship. Soft Props is an innovatively developed system. It is generated from a nucleus of two modules that can be combined together to create a galaxy of configurations, distinctive both for independence and versatility. Modular padded seating, with end, middle or corner elements, all linked by a tube made up of four different parts in metal, interchangeable and with invisible joints, allows for the creation of different compositions. The visible tube outlines the perimeter of the seats, creating a protective boundary, which defines space within space; some outer sections of the tube are covered with polyurethane foam, with an aesthetic as well as practical function. Starting with the most abstract element, the ottoman, the system can be arranged to effectively converse with the surrounding area. The individual modules come together naturally to compose the classic two-seater sofa, an island, a chaise longue or even a bed. The system is completed by low side tables, with or without a drawer, to be joined to the padded elements, and by a separate side table, in different finishes.
The market success of the “8” sofa, introduced in 2014, prompted Cassina to expand the range with the “8 Cube”. A collection of padded elements, which traces the figure 8, but which also offers a version with an even softer seat and simpler, more contained lines, while still maintaining the same quality craftsmanship and minimalism of the previous system. Its distinctive features include the elegant cast aluminium sleds that support the generous cushions, perfectly aligned with its carefully tailored upholstery; the light aluminium frame, refined with a padded leather or fabric trim. The new collection is distinguished by its padded elements without the lateral and rear panel structure used in the 8 model. They are therefore simpler but certainly no less incisive from an aesthetic and functional viewpoint. The backrests and armrests, at the same height, create new proportions, offering greater levels of comfort. This new collection comprises a swivel armchair, two- and three-seater sofas, chaise lounge, corner and end pieces: modular items that be arranged in a wide range of configurations or as individual pieces, distinguished by their sobriety and impeccable elegance.
