We invited architects and designers from across Manchester to come to our Moooi event which was introducing one of their new pieces- The Perch Light. This meant we could re welcome those who have attended many other Moooi events with us over the past ten years of our relationship with them, such as the event held back in 2010. This time around, we were getting creative with making origami birds to replicate The Perch Light with templates provided to us by Moooi.
The collection by Umut Yamac was inspired by the nature and beauty of a bird perched on a branch ‘flirting, singing and celebrating life’. All of the pieces in this collection engage with the user in a playful and imaginative way. The product is made from steel and brass lacquered aluminium and lit with in-built LED. The weight of the aluminium at either end of the bird helps to keep stability but allows the bird to rock back and forth. The bird can also be accustomed to sit and face either way preferred.
Introducing the Perch Light – our showroom ready for the guests to arrive
We spent a couple of days preparing the showroom for the event, this included cleaning, moving our existing furniture and having furniture delivered from the Moooi showroom in London. We created a display to show all the products prominently. We prepared food and drinks for the guests and set all of the origami templates out ready to be made!
Laszlo, who is Moooi UK’s A&D Account Manager came down from London to help the event and teach us all how to create a paper version of the bird from The Perch Light. He was an expert as he has made it many times, making a difficult task look easy! Soon after all of the guests arrived we sat down and got stuck in making our paper birds. Apparently, even at expert level it takes around 45 minutes to an hour to finish one of these properly… which was definitely a minimum time for most of us in the showroom that night!
We welcomed guests from various local design and architecture studios as well as students from MSA and other local universities. It was a great chance for networking for everyone involved.
There were quite a few impressive birds in the room by the time the event was finished, most were made exactly as per the instructions but some people made theirs little quirkier! The photos below show some of the final products!
Thank you to everyone who attended… we hope everyone enjoyed themselves and to see you all again at the next event!
